Boat Quay hawker centre circa 1970s

When irememberSG posted a photo of the hawker centre next to Singapore River / Cavenagh Bridge, it brought back nostalgic memories of childhood from the 1970s.

We used to live in nearby Cecil Street and my parents or grandfather would bring me to this hawker centre or we would pass by very often. I always remember the rows of hawker stalls right next to the Singapore River, behind the present day Fullerton Hotel. There were many bum boats then, not for commercial purpose.

The hawker centre has long been demolished. Nowadays it is just a business district with high buildings and offices, with pubs and restaurants in the row of shophouses by the quiet Singapore River.
